What is the Color Category?

WHITE – because of its Value of 9.23 and Chroma of 0.30. Because of its nuance, Ceiling Bright White might show up actually looking bluish gray.

Nuance is an interesting color concept – it means that you consider a color’s Value and Chroma at the same time. CBW has the potential to flash bluish-gray because of where it sits on the Value pole (which is represented with eye icons on the Colorography) and also its Chroma which is 0.30.

It’s the combination of the distance on the Value pole from a true neutral white AND an extremely low Chroma of 0.30.

In other words, CBW doesn’t have an amount of Chroma to off set it from a neutral not true white Value of 9.23.

These characteristics are ideal for many in terms of what they think a bright white ceiling should look like.

While others prefer a warmer option; for them I recommend PPG’s Delicate White.

    1. You need to check with your local Sherwin-Williams store and ask what product they have for CBW. If they don’t have stock, they might refer you to another store.

  1. So happy I came across your website! I am in the process of picking pain colors for my home and plan to have Pure White walls (SW satin sheen), and Pure White trim (semi-gloss)… standard ceiling color (flat finish) is ceiling bright white but from what I am seeing above this color may come across as blue-ish? I’m thinking it might be best to stick with Pure White for everything… Thanks for any advice you can give!

    1. I’m so happy you’re here, Kerry. 🙂

I would not do CBW. Pure White is a good strategy.

My favorite ceiling color if you want a white is PPG’s Delicate White. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams can make pretty versions of it.

It’s on all my ceilings in my home and rentals. I typically use Extra White on trim/doors but it works with Pure White too.
